| AN EXAMPLE To read the time as displayed in the accompanying photograph, evaluate each column in sequence: The left most column ("tens of hours"): only the bottom light is lit (value 1), so the value of this column is 1. The second column from the left ("hours"): no lights are lit, so the value of this column is 0. The third column from the left ("tens of minutes"): only the third light from the bottom is lit (value 4), so the value of this column is 4. The fourth column from the left ("minutes"): only the fourth light from the bottom is lit (value 8), so the value of this column is 8. The fifth column from the left ("tens of seconds"): the bottom light is lit (value 1), as is the light above it (value 2), so the value of this column is "1" + "2" = 3. Finally, the right most column ("seconds"): the bottom light is off, but the light above it (value 2) is on, as is the light above that one (value=4), so the value of this column is "2" + "4" = 6. |
